V Australia have just launched an interesting campaign to promote their Sydney - LA flights.
Called 4320 LA, it selects a group of 3 friends to be sent to LA for 3 days. Once there, they need to tweet every minute for 4320 tweets to win a bigger prize of an around the world ticket each.
It’s interesting to see V Australia embrace Twitter so thoroughly for this competition. I had a whinge about them on Twitter a few months ago, which they eventually responded to, so they do keep an eye on what’s said on Twitter. (As an aside, their web system doesn’t allow online check-in or choosing a seat online, which I find really strange in an airline that launched this year).
They haven’t really mentioned how they’re going to select the 3 people who get the trip to LA, unless it’s buried deep within their site. The cynic in me is assuming that it’s going to be from your photo that you submit when you enter the competition - I am guessing that no ugly old people will be winning this one.
It’s a clever campaign in that they are raising awareness that LA is a good destination for the weekend - it really gets “3 days in LA” into your head and makes you realise that it’s doable and would be fun (I just came back from 4 days in LA and had a blast).
I do think that the winner’s twitter stream is going to be the most boring twitter stream in the whole world - I don’t think they’ve understood that nobody wants to read a tweet a minute for 3 days. It’s going to be the most unsubscribed twitter user out there. My twitter stream from LA essentially read as “Doing this, amazing”, “went to the best restaurant”, “oh this bar is so cool”, “I’m drunk”, “gaaaaaaaaaaah”, “sdjsdfdsjidsfjisdf”….. “ughh what a hangover” and that was spread out as about 8 tweets a day. Repeat something like that every minute for 3 days and it will be incredibly tedious.
The site appears to have been put together by Droga 5, the agency behind the Still Free - ecko unlimited campaign.
