I admit I’m not nostalgic for days of buying cassettes or CDs - vinyl was way before my time. I hate having a shelf in my house for hundreds of CDs I never listen to as I have them all in digital formats - I just can’t bring myself to throw them all away. But I realise I’m probably the exception and people still like having a tangible record of music.
A British singer, Tallulah Rendall, has decided to both release her latest single for download, but also give away a vinyl single wrapped in beautiful artwork, with a story attached. Each single has a unique referral number for downloading the song that fans can pass on to their friends. Those people who have their codes used the most will get the album free.

I think this is a really gorgeous way of harnessing word of mouth, as well as getting your fans to do your marketing for you. Tallulah says “each owner becomes involved and feels special”, which I think is true - as a fan you feel like you’re helping her become more popular, as well as getting that social credibility of introducing your friends to a new musician.
