I’ve previously worked for a Telco (Hi there 3) so I know how disorganised they can be but I am still amazed and the utter disorganisation, chaos and total f**kups around the telcos and the iphone launch in Australia.
Many people have already ranted about the data pricing plans. What really gets my goat is the fact that I have signed up for iphone updates and news with Optus and Vodafone, yet apart from the “you have now subscribed to iphone updates” email, I haven’t heard diddley squat from either of them.
It took Vodafone two weeks after the Steve Jobs announcement to even mention the iphone on their website. Optus was a bit more “together” being only a day late. Seriously, this is the biggest event for consumer excitement for a mobile phone ever… they must have had months of notice, yet can’t even put up another page on their website?
Now I’m reading that Optus are selling the iphone at midnight on Thursday, and Vodafone are also holding an event.
Optus will open its George Street store in Sydney at midnight on Thursday. On Friday morning, the day of the iPhone 3G’s official debut, Optus will open a number of its stores two hours early at 7am for eager early adopters itching for their iPhone fix. Melissa Clare, Optus’s corporate affairs manager, said only deposit holders who were Optus customers would be able to collect their handset at the midnight launch in Sydney. On Friday, deposit holders would get priority service but anyone could come and buy an iPhone.
…
Vodafone has contacted City of Sydney council for permission to hold a 200-person iPhone event on Friday morning at Regimental Square in Wynyard.
Hey guys, don’t you think that people who signed up for iphone updates via email would maybe want to receive iphone updates via email? What was the freaking point of signing up and giving you my email address if you were going to totally ignore me and talk to the newspaper? I already read the newspaper… if you can’t give me any info then why bother pretending you will?
And don’t even get me started about how the iphone is being released in 3 days and Vodafone STILL haven’t released pricing.
I’ve had it up to here with the telcos. I’m thinking I might as well buy a cracked one from the US and stick with Virgin Mobile. The aussie telcos are just proving that they don’t know their asses from their elbows.

Right on!
The iPhone will shake up the industry, and they don’t seem to care, or are just too scared. I’m still thinking of getting an unlocked one (from the US, Italy, wherever) and then shop around for the best plan (probably Virgin). Though it won’t be this weekend.
