Webmonkey’s back and looking good

Back when I first started coding HTML in 1996, one of the most valuable resources I used was Webmonkey. It was by far the best site available, offering step by step tutorials as well as more advanced techniques. It was fantastic for both learning new languages and getting more skillful at those you already knew and it was a site I visited at least daily, often spending hours on their site.

It kind of got left behind after the dotcom boom and bust. It was still relevant and interesting in 2001 but it just seemed to be neglected and untouched with time and has been quietly gathering dust ever since.

Wired have just relaunched the new Webmonkey with a much stronger focus on community and a slick new design, covering new topics like User Experience Design, mobile and creating blogs. I have a few minor quibbles with the information design - I wish they’d add a quick summary after each tutorial instead of just a heading - but overall they have done a good job. I’m hoping they’re going to add new categories such as online marketing or social media topics as they grow and expand.

I’m looking forward to reacquainting myself with Webmonkey 2.0

This looks really good. Although under Python they write:

“As the joke goes, the most popular way to write Python code is to indent with spaces.”

If that’s their idea of comedy, I’m not coming to the Christmas party.

Me too! I was once an avid reader of Webmonkey and recall the tutorials being pretty handy… way back when. Nice to see it getting new life.
